The ESWC resurrection, a terrible sequel?
By Binteh on Wednesday 30 June 2010Everyone has been very excited about the ESWC coming up, however, has anyone taken a second to think about the possible dissappointment the ESWC could create if it didn't lead up the standarts the old ESWC used to give us?
The "old" ESWC was extremely popular not only because of its high competition and high prize money, but also because it was the only big tournament who brought together female and male gamers. The organisers themselves took extreme care of the players comfort and happiness, making sure that it is not only a fun event for the viewers, but also for the players.
When the old ESWC went bankrupt, it was a disaster for a lot of gamers, in particular female gamers as this was their only large tournament. However, the memories the ESWC has given us can never be forgotten. Surely you remember the Polish MYM's victory or insane rounds by HeatoN when playing for NiP. Or even more, the pulse monitors so you could tell the blood pressure of the players and know the stress they were under, the outdoors screens or the balloons you would hit together to make noise, the bad sportsmanship by the French ladies as they insult the Swedish team as they walk up on stage, and last but not least, the event closing party which was always so popular.

Will the current ESWC be able to make new positive memories like these? I have my doubts. Firstly, it's Disneyland, this tells me that the most attention will be put on DisneyLand and not ESWC, it's a pure marketing move for them, and I'm afraid that they will concentrate on the marketing of the event and the park and that they will forget about the players.
Secondly, I was able to have a bit of a taste as to how the "organising" of ESWC works as H2k Gaming is sending 2 teams themselves (CS 1.6 and FIFA players), and I have to say, I'm not exactly impressed by the efficiency of the support ESWC has given so far. Answering a simple email seems to be an obstacle for some ESWC staff, a simple email which could make the difference for an organisation as to if their team would participate or not.
Thirdly and lastly, the support. The old ESWC may have been late on paying out prize money, but they gave every support possible to make the teams at least appear in Paris, this year, if you got ESWC to pay your flight, you're already lucky. When you know that great teams such as Tyloo and other further away teams aren't going to be able to participate because of bad communication and support between ESWC and the organisation, which then led to late organisation of the trips and no possibilities to get visa's in time, it leaves your throat a bit sour. Do they even care?
Of course, with ESWC opening its doors today, the answers will be answered over the next few days. But I don't think I am the only one who is a bit weary of ESWC and its promises, as esports worker, I think we all know the story of "promises that never happened because of <insert B&^%£(*T excuse>.
